3G(FOG) SILVER FROM THE SKY (overview)

Our project is an interdisciplinary project focused on sustainable water management, developed at the Turkey STEM National Workshop. Its main purpose is to draw attention to the decreasing flow of the Sakarya River, to enable students to connect with the water ecosystem, and to find solutions to real-world problems using a STEM approach.

Initially, through a story we prepared as a project group, students became aware of the relationship between land and water, and understood the importance of the river's biodiversity from an ecosystem perspective. Then, through research, a parent-supported field trip, and expert support from the local municipality, students identified the causes of the seasonal water decrease in the river as agricultural irrigation, drought, and irresponsible use. Furthermore, thanks to the support of municipal experts and the Project Wet organization, students were introduced to concepts such as the importance of water footprint and the water cycle. Using a biomimicry approach, the children's attention was drawn to the Namib Desert Beetle through an educational song. Inspired by its water-gathering method, the children conducted experiments on how moisture in the air can transform into water. As a result of the experiment, they designed AI-powered "mist net" with humidity sensors that would not disrupt the natural balance. During the prototype development process, the children, divided into groups, first prepared posters and shared them with the school and parents. They then created and presented their prototypes. The activities, which are aligned with the European Green Deal and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6 - clean water and sanitation), are being shared on a blog and YouTube, attracting attention beyond the local level and inspiring other projects. This study was conducted jointly with teachers from 9 different schools in the local area, within their respective classrooms.
